Webster defines family as a group of people united by certain convictions or a common affiliation. If that is the case, Family Reunion is truly a band of brothers and sisters. In 1980 the band was first conceived by two men from Chicago's Robert Taylor Homes. Ironically, a place synonymous with broken families, deferred dreams and endless poverty.
Johnny Darnell Allen and Leonard Heard still remain friends, and continue to play in venues across the United States, despite years of dispute, turmoils, and serious illnesses. However, despite their adversities and tribulations they have never been tempted to sacrifice their brand of music, nor abandon their inspirations.
According to Johnny Darnell Allen " The original band's name was Contagious. We were a self contained band with a versatile group of vocalist. However, by 1990 the group was in turmoil and we had to go through some tumultuous times. In order to avoid any future conflict and avoid further confusion Leonard and I relinquished the name and we became Family Reunion".
However, there would be more adversity in years to come. By 2000 Johnny Darnell Allen was stricken with a brief but serious illness, and Leonard Heard became ill from a rare spinal cord infection that left him paralyzed for a year.
Before you start to feel pity for these guys stop! Despite the numerous personnel changes, and health issues, today they are doing fine and performing better than ever. Joined with Marcus Hunter, Michael Hudson, Gwen Terrell, Chuck Patton, JR Wydra, Anthony Thomas and Vince Harris, they are mesmerizing audiences with a wonderful combination of strong lead vocals, smooth harmonies, and great musicians. " I am back in the saddle through the grace of God and the group is looking forward to bigger and better things", said Leonard Heard.
You may have never bought their songs, or heard they names mentioned on the radio. However, they are a family of survivors, much like their brand of music. Based on an affiliation of endurance, faith and love of song, Family Reunion is a family and the greatest band you've never heard. Go see for yourself.
